Just How Dangerous Are The Mosquitoes In Baltimore?

May 15, 2021

Male and female mosquitoes typically eat various types of pollen, nectar, and other sugary substances found in the surrounding environment; however, females also consume the blood of humans and animals to obtain adequate amounts of protein required for producing eggs.  Female mosquitoes identify potential human hosts by detecting carbon dioxide and body temperature, as well as visual indicators including movement and color. The majority of females will lay their eggs in, or very close to, standing water, often producing hundreds at a time. Eggs soon develop into phases, such as larva and pupa, before reaching adulthood.

The Types Of Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Although they are less likely to travel indoors, mosquitoes are known for becoming an aggravating nuisance for people participating in outdoor activities during the warmer months. Mosquitoes land on humans and quickly penetrate the skin with a bite, which causes an adverse reaction from the saliva of the pest. Most people develop a red and itchy patch on the surface of the skin.

Mosquito-borne diseases may be transmitted as these pests travel between hosts. Examples include the West Nile virus, Zika virus, dengue, malaria, and other dangerous problems.

Tips For Limiting Mosquitoes

It is nearly impossible to completely prevent mosquitoes from entering outdoor areas. However, several practices will help prevent them, and keep you safe from bites.

  • Wear long-sleeve shirts and full-length pants to limit areas of exposed skin.

  • Apply insect repellents, such as sprays or lotions containing DEET, picaridin, and other EPA-approved options.

  • Limit outdoor activities during the hours of dusk and dawn in the summer months when mosquitoes are most active.

  • Remove any objects that will create pools of water from rainfall, including flowerpots, buckets, recycling bins, or kiddie pools.

  • Change the water in bird baths or pet dishes regularly to eliminate any eggs that may be developing.

  • Keep all water flowing away from the home by properly clearing gutters and downspouts.

The Importance Of Contacting A Professional Pest Exterminator

Many property owners who recognize that a pest-related problem is developing mistakenly attempt to try home remedies, or store-bought do-it-yourself treatment options sold in local stores and online merchants. Unfortunately, despite their farfetched claims of being simple and effective, the majority of these products only result in mediocre or short-term benefits. Promptly consulting with a local professional is the best choice. The provider will conduct a thorough interior and exterior inspection, recommend a safe and effective solution, and assess any conditions that make your home susceptible to further intrusions from these bothersome pests.

The experts at Destroy Pest Control have recently developed our Yard Guard Mosquito & Tick Program that is largely a preventative approach that uses bait traps and non-chemical granules to repel mosquitoes. One of our certified technicians will visit the property each month during the spring and summer months for ongoing treatment.
